More immediately relevant is a geometrical design on the inside cover of a magnificent Qurʾan now in the collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.49 Here the spaces contain a double concentric circle (fig. 3.4). It also appears that all four sides have been trimmed to form twin horn extensions, creating a visual impression similar to the “knife” patterns found on talismanic tunics from West Africa.50 Yet another instance is a talismanic collection of snippets from Qurʾanic verses (and a few words in Soninke), collected by Pierre Eugene du Simitière in the 1770s from an enslaved African Muslim in the Caribbean. It is accompanied on the reverse by a simplified version of the strapwork design.51 These examples indicate that the strapwork pattern was well known in sacred contexts, both as an accent to the text of the Qurʾan and occasionally in the mosque as well.
